A Labor of Love with all the Trimmings
November 22nd, 2011 | Posted by in Movie Reviews | New ReleasesIn honor of the American tradition of turkey, mashed potatoes and giving thanks, we have selected Kyoko Miyake’s documentary, “Mrs Birks’ Sunday Roast,” as this week’s Movie of the Week. This sweet and beautifully shot short film–selected for the BFI National Archive collection–is a portrait of the passionate Fumiko Birks, a Japanese woman living and cooking in Great Britain.
After marrying a British man and moving far from her native Japan, Mrs Birks has become a well-respected expert on British cuisine. Her recipes and cooking secrets are widely loved. “Mrs. Birk’s Sunday Roast” follows her she prepares her traditional Sunday Roast. She talks of her feelings on tradition, cooking, culture and fairy tales as she prepares her feast, sharing her wisdom with her family and with us. This film was an official selection at both the London Short Film Festival and the Documentary Edge Film Festival, and voted Best Documentary at the Super Shorts International Film Festival, and we’re proud to be celebrating Thanksgiving with this gorgeously gustatory short documentary!
