Some things are universal; a little black dress, an appreciation for white bread and, ah yes, a great love of one Mr. Colin Firth. This timeless gentleman is at his finest in 2010’s “The King’s Speech”. He was universally appreciated by gay men and straight young women alike in my screening’s audience as we watched this movie together. Colin’s dashing good looks are prominent in this Oscar nominated film alongside the film’s handsome design and admirable direction. “The King’s Speech” was directed by Tom Hooper, most recognized for the film Elizabeth I, and with this film he truly solidifies himself as the reigning king of period pieces. The set design, the acting and the clothes – my god, the clothes – create a gorgeous film and Hooper should be proud. Author David Seidler writes sympathetic and complicated characters, viewers will find themselves hating and loving all of them at various points throughout this film. Helena Bonham Carter as Prince Albert’s wife, Elizabeth Bowe-Lyon, is, as always, perfection. Not her usual role of semi-gothic crazy, this truly displays her talents; she is the supportive, and at times silent, wife of the king. She does a brilliant job of blending the modern edge of the Queen Mum with the reality of the time at which she lived. A truly touching moment arises for all the royal family after the king’s coronation where Firth shines as a torn family man and royal leader. My love of Colin Firth makes me obviously biased, but it’s hard to find faults with this film and I am truly rooting for it as Oscar night looms. It is a beautiful historical piece; full of beautiful music, clothing and the lovely slow progression one expects from a British period piece. I’m hoping beauty, its classic characters and romantic elements outshine the apropos “The Social Network” this weekend… Anyone have any predictions for “Best Picture” or “Best Actor”? My money is on Mr. Firth for the win…

Colin Firth is super fabulous. He will win on Sunday.
I disagree completely. James Franco owns ’127 Hours’ and deserves the Oscar.
And, I believe ‘The Social Network’ will win Best Picture for sure.
OMG! I so agree Katharine!
With people like obama in the white house, crazy things like movie-making and admiration of people like Colin Firth will keep happening!
Xavier, unfortunately I think you are mistaken about “The Social Network” taking home the oscar for best picture. All the signs are pointing to “The King’s Speech” as Sunday’s big winner. “The Social Network” has been losing momentum while “The King’s Speech” has been sweeping the awards since the Golden Globes. It has taken the big awards at the SAG, PGA & DGA awards which are better indicator of oscar success as the Academy is predominately made up of guild members.
While this information is sound, I feel The Social Network could still surprise. With the growing popularity of The King’s Speech, a blacklash of votes towards other films could still happen.
I could site cases, but I’m lazy.
